The new office of graphic design studio Futago is located in iconic Salamanca Place on Hobart’s waterfront. The space is designed to be playful while considering the practical issues of the existing heritage tenancy and the studio’s functional needs.

Designed in close collaboration with our clients, Daniel and Kate, the project focused on using on-site materials and incorporating new materials with minimal waste. The new additions deliberately contrast the heritage warehouse’s solid timber and brickwork. Meeting spaces and back-of-house areas play with the heavy-beamed structure of the roof, maximising existing roof lights to add extra light into the space and create a childlike depiction of a house.

Futago’s brief was to incorporate the existing fit-out elements within the newly configured spaces and give them a second life. Oversized vinyl skins depicting 17th-century agricultural life on glazing units provide privacy and interest while injecting pattern and layering into the space.

OSB board was chosen to construct all the new enclosures due to its user-friendly nature. It allows off-cut pieces to join seamlessly, resulting in minimal waste. The project also utilised lightweight and easily reconfigurable furniture elements, providing the team with a flexible working setup.

Overall, this space allows Futago to focus on creativity and provides a flexible and engaging environment for their team.
