Design for a Well-Made Life
We are an Interior Architecture studio dedicated to Tasmania’s built history.
At IN-TERIA, we specialise in revitalising older buildings—from boutique retail and hospitality to heritage homes—by layering modern functionality with rich textures and warmth. We believe every space has a story already written in its walls; we just help write the next chapter.
Based in Hobart, our team brings together expertise in architecture, building, interiors, and product design. At our core, we are agents of change. We don't just design; we specialise in the art of reinvention, renewal, and re-imagination. There is a certain soul in an older building that you just can't manufacture, and we love the challenge of breathing new life into these spaces so they are ready for their next century.
What does a ‘well-made life’ look like to you?
To us, it’s a space that honours its history while working effortlessly for the present. We believe it is found in the quiet, sensory details of your day: the ritual of morning tea in a sun-drenched corner, the focus found at a desk flooded with cool south light, or the tactile warmth of a timber counter in a busy café. We don’t just design rooms; we craft the atmosphere where your daily life happens—creating spaces that nurture you in solitude and connect you to others.
How we can help
Whether you are thinking about re-imagining your existing space or creating something entirely new, we are here to help you navigate that change.
For the Commercial Client: We help values-led Tasmanian brands turn physical spaces into storytelling tools. By layering contemporary functionality over local heritage, we create high-traffic environments—bars, cafes, and offices—that feel established, authentic, and deeply connected to their community.
For the Homeowner: We specialise in ‘gentle’ renovations for older Tasmanian homes. We don’t strip away character; we add texture, warmth, and modern flow to ensure your home’s history remains visible while meeting the demands of modern living.
The Finer Details
While our studio focuses on the architecture of a space, our sister brand, IN-TERIA Goods, focuses on the objects within it. We design and craft architectural hardware and furniture that celebrate the same principles of texture, warmth, and timelessness. You can explore our collection of bespoke handles, pulls, and objects [here].
We’ve seen firsthand how the environments we occupy play a massive role in how we experience life. A well-designed space should act as a vessel for your past, present, and future—supporting your lifestyle today while protecting the story of the building for tomorrow.
Do you need a hand to refine, enrich, or expand your built world?

About
IN-TERIA is an ongoing conversation between architecture, interior design, and the art of making.
Established in 2003 by Interior Designer Karryn Dargie and Architect Dean Baird, our studio is built on a twenty-year partnership in both work and life. Based in Hobart, we have deliberately kept our practice small. This allows us to maintain a simple, laid-back lifestyle for our family while ensuring that every project we take on receives our full, undivided creative energy.
A Partnership of Disciplines
We believe the most successful spaces are born when the "big picture" and the "fine detail" are designed in tandem.
Karryn is the big-picture thinker. She approaches design from the inside out, focusing on the sensory experience of a room—how the light falls, how the materials feel, and how a space nurtures the people within it.
Dean brings the architectural rigour. With a deep background in the technicalities of building and structure, he ensures that our "re-imaginations" are as technically sound and functional as they are beautiful.
Together, we weave our respective disciplines into a singular outcome. We aren't interested in trend-driven design; we are interested in longevity.
Why Tasmania?
Our work is deeply connected to the Tasmanian landscape and its built history. We are "curious creatures" fascinated by the art of assemblage—how things are put together. This curiosity led us to collaborate with some of the island’s most talented master artisans, from woodturners and foundries to ceramicists.
These relationships don't just result in beautiful hardware (via our sister brand, IN-TERIA Goods); they inform how we design buildings. We understand materials because we work with the people who shape them.
We know that a renovation or a new business fit-out is a significant life event. Our role is to be your expert guides and steady hands. We relish the opportunity to create positive change for people who, like us, are seeking a well-made life.
We are relaxed in our manner, but meticulous in our craft. When you work with us, you are working directly with the people whose names are on the door.
Let's build real value together.
